The aim of this thesis is to investigate the applicability of contrastive linguistics theories with respect to Chinese-English translation. Specifically, the focus is on two related but distinct linguistic theories: Vinay and Darbelnet's translation shift taxonomy and Loh's model on the principles and techniques of translation. The former has been a fixture of mainstream translation studies for decades, while the latter, though of equal vintage, has been largely overlooked by Western scholars until quite recently. Loh's approach has risen to prominence in part because it offers a viable alternative to Vinay and Darbelnet's taxonomy, which is often criticised as being too Eurocentric.

Analysing four chapters from the English translation of Wu Ming-yi's novel The Man with the Compound Eyes, this thesis will compare the two models in an attempt to ascertain

    a) if Vinay and Darbelnet's taxonomy really is as ill-equipped to deal with non-European languages as has been claimed, and

    b) whether Loh's model is indeed better suited to explaining the processes that underlie Chinese to English translation.
