The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of collegiate athlete’s passion and mental toughness. In addition, the mediating effect of positive emotion on the relationship between passion and mental toughness was further examined. The participants were 244 (165 males and 79 females) collegiate athletes recruited from four universities in Northern part of Taiwan. Average age was in 20.6 ± 1.5 years. After received the informed consent from the participants, they were asked to complete a questionnaire which assessed their passion, positive emotion, and mental toughness in sport. The results of the Pearson correlation and partial correlation indicated that both harmonious passion and obsessive passion were positively correlated with mental toughness. The correlation between harmonious passion and mental toughness was higher then the correlation between obsessive passion and mental toughness. Regarding to the mediating effect of positive emotion on the relationship between passion and mental toughness, the results indicated that both harmonious passion and obsessive passion could predict positive emotion and then predicted mental toughness. That is, the relationship between passion and mental toughness was mediated by positive emotion. The implication of the results and future directions were discussed.
