The article explores differences between expert and novice interpreters with regard to conference preparation. The existing literature on conference preparation focuses on universal principles of conference interpretation, but seldom discusses what interpreters actually do to prepare for real-life interpretation tasks. The author hopes that a comparison of both expert and novice interpreters will help readers to better understand practical applications and real-world execution of the conference preparation process. This investigation was conducted primarily through interviews, in which conversations with 5 expert and 5 novice interpreters were all recorded and transcribed. The transcripts outline the processes behind real-life conference preparation. Afterwards, thorough and comprehensive analysis was conducted to find out the minute differences between how these two groups prepare for interpretation tasks. It was found that apart from their background knowledge and higher command of language, expert interpreters are also equipped with conference preparation techniques acquired from their wealth of experience gained from performing a huge amount of interpretation tasks. These techniques allow experts to prepare for interpretation tasks in an efficient manner. This study discloses preparation methods that exist outside the interpretation classroom in order to provide interpretation trainers with new insight on how best to teach conference preparation and to help interpretation students explore how best to prepare themselves for interpretation tasks.
