The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Sensorimotor Training Program(SMTP) on
sensorimotor ability, language academic attainment, and interpersonal relationship of children with learning disabilities. Subjects were 72 frist and second grades children with learning disabilities
in readingand writing. They were derived from resource classrooms of primary schools in Teipei
City. Among them, 37 subjects served as the experimental group, while the other 35 subjects served as the control group. Experimental group participated in the SMTP for eight months, which consisted of eight activities implemented in every morning, while the control group did not. However both groups took part a supplementary teaching in reading in theat
afternoon on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Obtained
data were analyzed by a two-way mixed design ANOVA.
The main findings of this study were as follows:
1.The SMTP had a positive effect on eye movement and
visual-motor integration , but no effect on
sensorimotor ability .
2.There was no significant correlation between
eye movement and sensorimotor ability.
3.The SMTP had a positive effect on academic
achievement of reading and written language.
4.The SMTP had a positive effect on interpersonal
relationship .
Based on the experimental results and observations, implications of SMTP for children with language learning disabilities were discussed. Finally, suggestions were made for special education and future studies.
