This paper attempts to unravel Bloom’s predicaments during his flâneurie in Dublin, which is under Britain’s colonization. I contend that, in relation to Walter Benjamin’s flâneur in Paris, the protagonist of Ulysses Leopold Bloom is confronted with more hindrances on account of Dublin’s colonial ambiance. The paper consists of five chapters. Chapter One offers an overview of Walter Benjamin’s archetypal figure of modernity the flâneur, and the adaptation of the French flâneur to Leopold Bloom, a colonized flâneur. Chapter Two examines the foreign face of Dublin caused by British domination. The urban plan designed by Britain as a heterotopia of compensation clashes with the space experienced by Irish citizens. In addition, the commercial network teeming with imports reinforces the defamiliarized cityscape perceived by Bloom. Chapter Three investigates the invisible fence of gaze that impedes Bloom’s flâneurie. On the one hand, he is hindered by the web of ruler’s detecting gaze that fabricates what Foucault calls a panopticon. On the other hand, he is interpellated by the hostile gaze of the xenophobic citizens because of his Jewish heritage. Chapter Four delves into Bloom’s mental state of loss at home. His estrangement from home reveals the incomplete transplantation of modernity, “colonial modernity,” from which the subjectivity of the subordinate is absent. As a wanderer at home, Bloom faces shocks from the gaze that intimidates and denigrates him. Though he wanders on the periphery, a liminal position of inside and outside, he endeavors to integrate into the Irish community with his pragmatic actions rather than windy words. Chapter Five concludes with the minute hope for Bloom to transgress the barriers on his way. He, a flâneur in colonial Dublin, is capable of untying ideological chains of British and Irish with his parallactic thinking, the multiple perspectives.
