  • 本文將初步探討美國寫實畫家愛德華.霍普之寫實繪畫與美國寫實主義的關聯,從美國寫實繪畫的發展源起與當代寫實主義在各方面影響的蓬勃景況切入,分析霍普之寫實繪畫與美國寫實主義在意義上界定的分際,並從藝術評論的分析以及霍普個人的回應與論述等,了解霍普對繪畫的觀念,藉以澄清並界定他在美國寫實主義繪畫潮流中的角色與定位,還諸合宜的歷史評價;此外並就霍普豐富多元的繪畫特質與主題,基礎的平面構成,心理層面的溯源,兩性關係的呈現以及文學或戲劇取材的文本來源等,評估霍普使用這些元素所構築出的繪畫世界如何反映其個人內心與時代互動、思辨的軌跡;再者,由於近年來對霍普寫實繪畫中有關心理、精神分析以及與文學、電影理論相關的創新研究相繼出現,加上學者們對霍普繪畫作品與傳記的寫作之重要文獻紛紛相繼問世,使得對霍普的研究與批評開始走向一個嶄新的模式,逐漸擺脫傳統風格傳承的狹窄定義,為霍普寫實繪畫的研究領域開闢之更新、更多元的途徑,成為相當有趣且引人注目的方向。本文最後將綜合霍普在藝術觀念、表現手法上對寫實繪畫的啟迪與發展,探討霍普所表現出二十世紀初美國文化表象之下的潛在精神風貌,以突顯霍普寫實繪畫真正的價值。
