Ensuring electronic resources in a library’s collection are well utilized by users has always been a top priority for librarians. Electronic resources are stored on the cloud, but without the access links, they are invisible to library users, making it difficult to justify high subscription prices if they aren’t well utilized. Discovery Services are like a new generation of federated search to help solve this problem. The user-friendly single search box and search function allow users to query all subscribed electronic resources and physical collections quickly. This study focuses on how the Discovery Services are utilized by users and also analyzes the factors that influence usage.
This study was conducted at Taipei American School to understand how the EBSCO Discovery Service are used by high school students, and analyzes the factors that affect students' behavioral intentions and their correlation with the influence of personal background variables. Using UTAUT as the research framework, a quantitative questionnaire survey was designed, and SPSS23.0 was used for statistical analysis. The study found that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence all have a significant impact on high school students’ behavioral intentions, which in turn indirectly affects their use behavior; and also found that facilitating conditions directly affect their use behavior. However, personal background variables, such as gender, grade level, experience on the Internet, and intrinsic self-motivation had no significant moderation effect on the 4 aspects and behavioral intention or use behavior.
Based on the research findings, two suggestions for improving the library services are as follows: 1. Encourage collaboration between the library and various subject departments including Science, Mathematics, Robotics, Drama, and Foreign Languages, to integrate library resources into their courses. Additionally, expand the library's variety of resources and EBSCO Discovery Service to all administrative department teams throughout the entire school. 2. Enhance the library's support by regularly reviewing and updating operation guides, creating teaching videos for independent learning, and promoting the use of electronic resources beyond regular school hours and off-campus. These suggestions could increase the utilization of the EBSCO Discovery Service and electronic resources, while also providing students with a better learning and research environment.
