Purpose: This study investigated the association between eHealth literacy and health-promoting lifestyles among adult Internet users. Factors including gender, age, education level, perceived health status, and health information seeking behaviors were also examined.
Methods: Study sample came from participants over the age of 20 who use the Internet. A total of 493 participants were recruited using a self-administrated online questionnaire. Sociodemographics, perceived health status, health information seeking behaviors were assessed. The eHealth literacy scale (eHEALS) and the short-form Chinese Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP-S) were used.
Results:
1. The study participants reported moderate to high level of eHealth literacy and moderate level of health-promoting lifestyles.
2. Study participants who were with higher education level, perceiving good health status, paying more attention to health, and with higher frequency of health information seeking behaviors demonstrated better eHealth literacy and health-promoting lifestyles. Those aged 20-49 years old reported better eHealth literacy, and those over 50 years old showed better health-promoting lifestyles.
3. The score of eHealth literacy scale was positively associated with the score of Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile.
4. Age, education level, perceived health status, health information seeking behaviors, and eHealth literacy were predictors of the health-promoting lifestyles. Paying attention to health was positively associated with all six dimensions of health-promoting lifestyles.
Suggestions: Interventions to attract the attention to health among adult Internet users may improve their eHealth literacy and health-promoting lifestyles. For different age groups, interventions should focus on promoting healthy lifestyles of young and middle-aged groups and strengthening the critical literacy of middle-aged and elderly people. In addition, the dissemination and quality of health information must be addressed.
