The purpose of this study was to predict and understand the male students' intentions and behavior to use motorcycle helmets on the basis of the Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB),and to compare the Theory of Reafsoned Action (TRA) with TPB in terms of their ability to predict intentions and behavior.
Data were collected during questionnaire surveys on a cluster sample of 202 male students who operate motorcycles in a junior college. A follow-up telephone interview of the sample was conducted approximately one month later. Self-reported data on subsequent helmet-use behavior were obtained from 180 of the 202 subjects, a 89% response rate. Results showed that percerived behavioral control and intentions were together moderately successful in predicting subjects'behavior to use a helmet. Besides, there was a positive interaction between perceived behavioral control and intentions. In support of the theory, intentions to use a safety helment when riding a motorcycle were accurately predicted on the basis of attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. Findings of this study should be useful in developing and targeting informational and eductional approaches designed to motivate voluntary use. In sum, the results of this study supported the hypothesis of the TPB and revealed that the TPB permitted more accurate prediction of intentions and behavior with respect to use a motorcycle helment than did the TRA.
