Romantic elements. In theory Merrill as well as Coleridge and
Keats reflects on real world objects. The purpose of this
reflection is to create in the poet's mind a new world. Merrill'
s new world is a world of certainty; he attempts to make
interior decoration of a room come alive with emotion. Merrill'
s changing emotion and Wordsworth's imagination with modifying
colors are like lamps to illuminate their mirror of reflection
upon real world objects. In poetry, Merrill and the individual
Romantic poet are related to each other in a special way.
Blake and Merrill both write poems of a pattern of retreat.
Whereas Wordsworth finds spiritual comfort in his memory of
landscape, Merrill finds no comfort in his memory of unhappy
childhood life. Merrill and Coleridge are the same stimulated
by real objects to think deep thoughts. Boredom of life and
travel to other places are characteristic of Byron and Merrill'
s poems. Whereas Shelley puts more emphasis on the expectation
of the coming of a new world than the tolerance of the old
world, Merrill thinks his new world is too far away to reach.
Keats and Merrill have different reactions to the dream visions
described in their poems. The four Romantic themes are then
introduced in the third part of this thesis. They are the
descriptions of the alienaation of poet from society, of
familiar people and sights, of the exotic and marvelous and of
the weariness of life. Finally, in the fourth part of this
thesis, poetry of experience is discussed as a form of poetry
found in Merrill as well as in Romantic poets.
