Workplace gossip is ubiquitous and often occurs in people's daily life. This study is based on the affective events theory, attempts to understand the impact of workplace negative gossip on withdrawal behavior, the mediating effect of negative affect between workplace negative gossip and withdrawal behavior, and the moderating effect of optimism between workplace negative gossip and negative affect. This study used convenience sampling method with questionnaire, and a two-stage survey was administered three weeks apart on full-time workers with six months of working experience. A total of 376 online questionnaires were collected. After excluding invalid samples, we obtained a final sample of 334 valid questionnaires and the valid response rate is 88%. The results showed that (1) negative workplace gossip which related to negative affect was positive; (2) negative affect which related to withdrawal behavior was positive; (3) the relationship between negative workplace gossip and withdrawal behavior was mediated by negative affect (4) optimism did not moderate the relationship between negative workplace gossip and negative affect.
