The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of balance and lower-extremity strength in middle-aged and elderly men engaged in jogging exercise. Totally 100 volunteers, aged from 55-70 years old, included jogging and sedentary controls, were asked to perform the following tests. These tests included one-leg stance test with eye-closed,functional reach test,8-foot up and go test,agility/dynamic balance test,10-meter straight walk test with eye-closed,30-second chair stand test. All the data were collected and analyzed with independent-samples t test and Pearson’s product-moment correlation. The results were shown as followed:
The functional reach test,8-foot up and go test,agility/dynamic balance test, and 30-second chair stand test of Jogging group were significantly better than those of sedentary controls(p<.05),but the one-leg stance test with eye-closed,10-meter straight walk test with eye-closed of this two groups were not significantly different from each other(p<.05).The 30-second chair stand test significantly correlate with functional reach test of static balance and 8-foot up and go test,agility/dynamic balance test of dynamic balance(p<.05).But The 30-second chair stand test did not significantly correlate with one-leg stance test with eye-closed of static balance and 10-meter straight walk test with eye-closed of dynamic balance(p<.05).
According to the results, jogging can enhance the elderly men’s ability of Balance and Lower-extremity Strength, which can prevent the fall of middle-aged and elderly men.I encourage people in every age that can select jogging as lifelong exercise, but,I suggest that you can have the motor-controled training of static balance and dynamic balance before you go jogging.
