更新世晚期位於北臺灣的古新店溪，原於新莊逆斷層崖下沉積林口扇洲。前人雖已提出接續之山腳正斷層活動與北部火山群的大規模噴發，造成新店溪古流路改道的初步看法，但尚須整合相關的地形面與地表、地下沈積物等證據進一步探討。據此，本研究擬透過地形特徵及野外露頭調查、比對鑽井資料，探討古新店溪下游在更新世晚期的可能流路位置，並討論山腳斷層、火山活動對流路變遷的影響。
研究結果發現：1.在地形面判釋上，僅林口台地東北緣向東緩降的三階可對比為高位河階面(LT)，其他觀音—大屯火山群周緣的8處地形面則屬火山碎屑岩階地。2.在地表與井下材料方面，研究區18處礫石層露頭中，有17處含變質砂岩的河相礫石，有7處可測得覆瓦方向，其中露頭位置相對較高者之礫石覆瓦方向較偏北或東北，而較低處者為偏西北；在所比對的167口鑽井資料中，有20口井鑽遇含變質砂岩的河相礫石層。這些地表與地下的礫石層應是古新店溪堆積的產物，惟並無年代資料，不過這些礫石層之上均為火山沉積物，顯示古新店溪最下游段被後來發生的火山沉積物覆蓋。
綜合研判上述地形面與源自古新店溪之礫石層露頭或井位的空間分布證據，本研究推測，山腳斷層作用開始後，古新店溪流路沿今林口台地東緣往東北流，且流路逐漸向東擺移形成三段階面；古流路向北可達淡水河北、大屯山南之北投忠義一帶，此段並受火山地形屏障；忠義以下游，根據工程排鑽井下的河相礫石層，指示古新店溪流路曾大致沿今淡水河流路向西而行。值得一提的是，在新北市三芝區橫山村竹子火山北緣之地質井下也發現應是源自古新店溪的含變質砂岩河相礫石，這是否表示古新店溪最下游段曾在更大的範圍擺盪，或曾發育面積更廣的河口扇洲？仍待進一步調查。
