This study aims to explore the impact of professional interpretation training on the consecutive interpreting abilities of military interpreters. With the increasingly close relations between Taiwan and the United States and the tense international situation, the significance of military interpreters in Taiwan-US military exchanges is becoming more prominent. However, there is a common misconception within the military that speaking English is sufficient for interpreting tasks. To address this issue, this study conducts a comparative analysis of the consecutive interpreting abilities of military personnel with and without formal interpretation training. The research subjects consist of two groups of military personnel: one group comprises military interpreters who have received formal interpretation training, and the other group includes bilingual military personnel without such training. The experimental materials are three Chinese military speeches recorded by military experts, which the subjects are required to interpret consecutively into English. Three native English-speaking raters evaluate the subjects based on two scales: accuracy of information and style of expression. Data analysis is conducted using independent sample t-tests and Cohen's Kappa values. The results indicate that subjects with an interpretation education background perform better in terms of information accuracy and style of expression than those without such a background. However, there is a low level of agreement among raters, reflecting differences in rating standards and understanding. This suggests the need for further standardization and unification of evaluation methods to improve consistency and reliability in ratings. This study highlights the importance of professional interpretation training in enhancing the abilities of military interpreters and recommends that the Ministry of National Defense strengthen the professional training of military interpreters. Furthermore, future research should consider expanding the sample size and limiting interpreting time to obtain more generalizable and reliable results. The findings of this study have significant practical implications for improving the selection and training methods of military interpreters.
