This study applied both qualitative and quantitative approaches to investigate the hunting culture of Bununs at Danda important wildlife habitat in central Taiwan, which includes their hunting motives, the relationship between motives and hunting strategies and the differences between generations. From September 2004 to September 2006, we interviewed 132 hunters and residents. Five major underlying dimensions of hunting motives, self esteem, recreation, in memory of ancestral environment, economical needs, and food supplies, were identified by factor analysis
(n=107). Our results showed that the major motives for hunting at Danda area were recreation and in memory of ancestral environment. There was no significant correlation between hunting motives and hunting strategies. The differences of motives between generations were significant, and the motive for recreation is significantly higher in 16-25 age-level than in others. However, the differences of hunting strategies between generations were not significant. Gun was the main hunting tool at Danda, and road hunting became prevalent in recent years. Therefore, the hunting pressure near roads and at low elevation areas may increase in the future.
