This study aims to explore the influence of premarital sexual behavior and attitudes toward marriage upon marital instability. There are two dimensions in marriage attitudes: cognition and intention. Cognition includes marriage valuation and the degree of marital happiness. Intention includes the intention to maintain a lasting marriage. Data from the secondary database had been used in this study in analyzing 859 Taiwanese married men and women aging between 20 and 65. The results of this study are as following.
1.Analysis of Current Status
(1)Premarital sexual behavior: 51.1% of married men and women have premarital sex experiences, among which male, the young, the highly educated and the non-religious are to higher proportion.
(2)Attitudes toward marriage: In general, married men and women have lower marriage valuation but have higher degree of marital happiness. In gender, marriage valuation and the degree of marital happiness of married men are higher than that of married women’s. In age, it shows a positive correlation with marriage valuation and the degree of marital happiness while the intention to maintain a lasting marriage says otherwise. Negative correlation was found between the degree of education and the marriage valuation, on the other hand, it is positively related to the intention to maintain a lasting marriage. In terms of religion, Buddhists have a significantly more positive valuation of marriage than those who are non-religious.
(3)Marital instability: 20.5% of married men and women are facing marital instability. While female has a higher proportion of marital instability, other factors such as age, education degree and religion have no visible effect.
2.Analysis of Attitudes toward Marriage
(1)Premarital sexual behavior results in married women’s negative attitudes toward marriage in marriage valuation and the degree of marital happiness.
(2)No association was found between premarital sexual behavior and all three dimensions of married men’s attitudes toward marriage.
3.Analysis of Marital Instability
(1)Married women's marital instability is affected by premarital sexual behavior.
(2)Married men's marital instability is affected by attitudes towards marriage including marriage valuation and the degree of marital happiness.
Keywords: marital instability, premarital sexual behaviors, attitudes toward marriage, married men and women
