This paper focuses on the development of the received signal strength (RSS)-based model in order to estimate the user distance from the access point to his/her wireless handset. However, the communication between the user’s handset and access point may have a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) propagation. In this case, it may cause a large deviation of measurement, and hence errors in location estimate.
In this paper, we build RSS models separately based on line-of-sight (LoS) and NLoS communications and determine which model to use. Furthermore, we propose a method to detect whether the user has changed his/her communication condition in each moment.
Simulation and experiment results show that our method is able to select a model with more than 50% of correctness for the user distance estimation when the user's position is static. An even more better performance is obtained when the user changes his/her communication condition.
