史上兼具中提琴演奏者和作曲家身分的偉大音樂家有不少例子，如巴赫、莫札特、舒伯特、德弗札克、沃恩．威廉斯、布利基、辛德密特和布列頓等人，其中僅有辛德密特在兩方面同時達到顯著成就。而今，在我們所處的時代之中，布萊特．狄恩是一位正為古典音樂作品延續歷史、出身且仍維持著中提琴一流演奏家的重要作曲家。
本文整理了狄恩的生平，瞭解他從中提琴家到作曲家的歷程，從作品概述中認識他的樂曲種類與豐富想法，以及音樂風格和影響；其後，筆者針對三首中提琴重要作品－《遺囑》（Testament, 2002）、《中提琴協奏曲》（Viola Concerto, 2004）和《赫爾辛格的房間》（Rooms of Elsinore, 2016）進行介紹與分析，實際研究狄恩寫作的精細手法，以對他獨到而深刻的音樂語彙得出更進一步的理解。

There are many examples of great musicians who were both viola players and composers in history, such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Peter Schubert, Antonín Leopold Dvořák, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Frank Bridge, Paul Hindemith and Benjamin Britten. Among them, only Hindemith achieved remarkable achievements in both aspects at the same time. Brett Dean (b. 1961) can be said to be a significant composer in our era who is continuing the history of classical music works and maintaining a first-class viola player.
This dissertation sorts out Dean's life, his journey from a viola player to a composer, his types of music and rich ideas, as well as his style and influence from the overview of his works. This dissertation will also select three important viola works- Testament (2002), Viola Concerto (2004) and Rooms of Elsinore (2016) for study and analysis, and do research on Dean's fine writing technique, with his unique and profound musical vocabulary to get a further understanding.
