In our experiment, we used organic dyes to replace the Ag+ ion that often serves as the photosensitizer in traditional Ag+-based photographic films. For instance, phenosafranin can oxide N,N-diethyl-2-methyl-1,4-
phenylenediamine (DEPD) during illumination. As DEPD is oxidized, it will react with α-naphthol and form a blue product, indophenol blue.
Based on these photochemical properties, a non-silver-based photographic system was developed. Experiment showed that sol-gel modifications are useful tools to fabricate the dye-containing films and modified electrodes for image recording. Many factors including the sol-gel formulas, oxygen effects and the applied voltage are important for the sensitivity and quality of these sol-gel based films.
