The purpose of this study is to explore the life experience of individuals with congenital visual impairments throughout their narrative about their experience and to explore their self development and social support they received. The researcher interviewed five persons with congenital visual impairments, and analyzed their narratives to answer the research questions. The results show two aspects: one is narrative profile, and the other is thematic connection.
The narrative profile shows the growth and social support of these five persons. The findings indicate four main parts: 1. Preschool: physical development and emotional attachment; 2. Childhood: cognition and interpersonal support; 3. Adolescent age: acceptance of impairments and self-identification, 4. Adulthood: occupational development and social support. The findings also indicate that the five participants share similar experience: 1. Not knowing the nature of their visual impairments; 2. Knowing their visual impairments; 3. Attempting to be normal to hide their mental status of impairments; 4. Impairments experience of frustration and withdraw of interpersonal relationship; 5. Accepting impairments.
Additionally, this study also presented several suggestions: 1. Expanding early experience of children with congenital visual impairments; and 2. Adapting to disability: impairment acceptance and self acceptance of persons with congenital visual impairments. Finally, the researcher also discussed the limitations of this study.
Keywords:congenital visual impairments, narrative, self development, social support
