This research aims to explore the application of creative arts in youths’ single issues with a focus on relationship virgins. As there is a growing emphasis on the importance of mental health nowadays, the researcher probes into the healing experience of theatre games and creating, with a focus on relationship virgins’ single issues. This research invites eight relationship virgins aged between 20-30 years old who go about their daily lives in Taipei and New Taipei City to tackle their single issues via four sessions of creative arts workshop. The researcher not only planned and operated the workshops, but also observed, analyzed, and concluded the thoughts and attitudes of the eight participants towards the relationship-virgin issues before-and-after the workshops.
This research is a case study as well as a narrative inquiry in investigating how drama and creation facilitate self-dialogues and growth, while integrating participant observation and in-depth qualitative interview as the methods for data collecting. The research questions are as followed: (1) What does the profile of relationship virgins aged between 20-30 years old look like? (2) What kind of thought process and self-exploration does relationship virgins aged between 20-30 years old go through while participating in the interviews and workshops? (3) What transformation of attitude takes place for relationship virgins aged between 20-30 years old after the participation in the interviews and workshops?
Results are that most youth relationship virgins are affected by how the society discriminates against singles, and they tend to avoid related topics while talking to peers. After four sessions of creative arts workshop and two interviews, the participants are able to take a liking to this aspect of themselves, elevate their identity of being a relationship virgin in a positive light, and bring themselves to discuss related issues more openly.
