This study explores the impact of Mazu belief on pro-environmental behavior among residents of the Matsu region. Mazu, widely worshipped along the southern coast of China and in Taiwan, holds significant cultural and social influence in Chinese communities. Using the Matsu region as a case study, this research employs structural equation modeling to analyze the relationships between religious belief, Mazu worldview, awareness of environmental hazards, willingness to sacrifice for the environment, and environmental behavior. Through surveys and statistical analysis, the study aims to deeply understand the mechanisms by which Mazu belief promotes environmentally friendly behavior among Matsu residents.
The research findings indicate that religious beliefs can enhance the worldview of Mazu belief and public environmental behavior. Additionally, the worldview of Mazu belief has a positive impact on environmental concern. There is a positive relationship between environmental concern and environmental behavior, meaning that the more individuals care about the environment, the more willing they are to take pro-environmental actions. Although the influence of environmental hazard perception on the willingness to sacrifice for the environment is not statistically significant, the path analysis of environmental concern aligns with domestic and international studies on the relationship between religion and pro-environmental behavior. However, in specific cultural contexts, Mazu belief may be influenced by the conservative attitudes of local culture, limiting followers' willingness to engage in public environmental issues. Overall, this study enriches the understanding of the relationship between Mazu belief and environmental behavior and provides valuable references for future research.
