The Moderate-Vigorous Physical Activity and Stage of Exercise Behavior and its Influential Determinants of Students in a Secondary School
Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the physical activity and stage of exercise behavior and its influential determinants of junior students in Taipei City. By using a stratified cluster sampling method and ch- osen randomly, 701 of the valid samples were collected with a self - administrated questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffe Post Hoc tests, Pearson’s product-monent and Multiple Regression were used to analyze the data. The results were followed:
1.The gender, grade and participated in exercise team of the subjects have a signific- ant effect on moderate-vigorous physical activity. The moderate-vigorous phys- ical activity of junior students had significant relationship with psychological variables, social cultural variables and environmental variables.
2.The junior students involved more in moderate-vigorous physical activities on weekend leisure time than that on weekday. The more popular activities were playing baseball, soft baseball, volleyball, table tennis, ten pins bowling , and riding bicycle.
3. Percentage distribution of the sample across the stages was: precontemplation , 13% (n =91); contemplation, 11.4% (n = 79); preparation , 43% (n = 299) ; action,13.6% (n = 96); and maintenance, 19% (n = 136). One-way ANOVA showed that there were significant differences between students’stages of exercise behavior and gender , grade, participated in exercise team, psychological variables, social cultural variables and environmental variables.
4. The moderate-vigorous physical activity of subjects in maintenance stages of exercise were more than who in other stages.
5.Gender, sport team membership, self-efficacy, physical activity enjoyment, exe- rcise role model, exercise social support, use computer on weekend and enviro-
nmental facilities were significant predictors of moderate-vigorous physical acti-
vity of junior students. The 35﹪variance of physical activity could be explained by demographic characteristics, psychological variables, social cultural variables and environmental variables. Gender was the most important predictors of mode- rate -vigorous physical activity of subjects.
