Abstract
The major purpose of this study was to examine the effect of students’ social physique anxiety on swimming performance at junior high school physical education classes. It was hypothesized that students with a higher level of social physique anxiety would perform worse than those with a lower level of social physique anxiety. Meanwhile, the effect of social physique anxiety on swimming performance would be stronger on female than on male students. The data was first analyzed by a two-way independent sample ANOVA to examine the effects of BMI and gender on social physique anxiety. Result showed a significant BMI main effect, F(2,202)=141.72, p<.00, SR2=.80, No gender main effect, F(1,202)=.81, nor BMI and gender interaction, F(2,202)=1.04, were found. The effects of social physique anxiety and gender were analyzed by a two-way independent sample ANOVA. No social physique anxiety and gender interaction was found, F(1,204)=1.15. Social physique anxiety, F(1,204)=.79., and gender main effect, F(1,204)=.21, were not significant as well. It seems that in the context of a physical education class, students’ social physique anxiety will not affect their swimming performance, as long as students are allowed to wear clothes on the pool side or students are grouped by gender. More studies were warranted to shed more lights on potential stratagies to reduce the effects of social physique anxiety on learning effects in physical education classe .
Key words : Social physique anxiety, swimming, performance
