The depiction of utopia has owned a long tradition in literature since the ancient time. With time passing, the definition of perfection, the problems of society and people’s needs have changed. Therefore, when the background context of a utopia has gone, it might not be viewed as a “perfect society” any longer. Until now, many designs of utopia have died out in the stream of time. As a result, the concept of utopia no longer pursues the concrete political blueprints, but gradually becomes a way of thinking which encourages people to explore different possibilities of the future.
If the concept of utopia has changed, then it would need a more suitable medium. Except for the traditional textual or visual media, like novels or movies, a new one is getting flourishing due to technological development, that is, the digital game. Unlike traditional media, except for presenting texts and videos, a new feature of digital games is that their content has interactivity. This feature makes the content of games flexible and thus provides the experience much different from other media. This thesis intends to clarify the characteristics of contemporary utopianism and digital games to show that they actually share many points in common and that the specific mechanisms of digital games can create various possibilities. Therefore, digital games can be viewed as a new medium suitable for presenting contemporary utopianism.
