This research focuses on local elementary policemen below the 10th ranking and aims to discuss the relationship between humor and their work adjustment and mental health. The discussion is divided into three stages. First, humor and mental health of policemen, as well as their current work adjustment, were explored; followed by an examination of the relationship between their work adjustment versus humor and mental health; and lastly, the predictability of humor on work adjustment and mental health of policemen. A questionnaire was used as the research method; it was distributed to four police organizations in north, central, south and east Taiwan, as well as to some specialized units. In total, 418 effective samples were collected and the results after analyses via descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation and hierarchical regression are shown below.
1.Elementary policemen tended to apply affiliative and self-enhancing humor. In terms of mental health, policemen tended to subjectively feel less satisfied with their personal life; have high degree of depression; still be in better emotional state . This suggests that the policemen’s mental health status still has room for improvement. Overall, the policemen felt they had good work adjustment.
2.Age and seniority have positive impacts on both elementary policemen’s mental health and work adjustment. The policemen’s humor was partly correlated to their mental health; their humor was also partly correlated to work adjustment and its three aspects; and their mental health were correlated to work adjustment.
3.The effects of elementary policemen’s humor on mental health and work adjustment are predicted below:
(i)Positive humor style has a significant predictable effect on one’s mental health. Self-enhancing humor has the best predictable effect on one’s life satisfaction, degree of depression and positive emotions. Self-defeating humor only has significant predictable effect on the degree of depression and negative emotions, and has the best predictable effect on negative emotions. Aggressive humor has positive predictable effect on life satisfaction.
(ii)Self-enhancing humor has the best positive predictable effect on one’s work adjustment and its three aspects. Affiliative humor only has positive predictable effect on the overall work adjustment, work performance and work satisfaction. Aggressive humor has negative predictable effect on work adjustment, work performance and work behavior. Self-defeating humor does not have any significant predictable effect on work ability and its three aspects.
Lastly, suggestions are proposed for future reference in terms of individual, organization and future work, based on the results and discussions of this study.
